Upsize Your Unit

Don't go with just the bare minimum that you need for space when you know that you're going to need to access the unit often. It's not going to matter if you can expertly stack boxes into a small space if you don't have room to walk around, open boxes, and take out the things you need. You want to create a storage space with ease of access, not win a game of Tetris.

Opting for a larger space will give you room to move around and create space between stacks of boxes so that you can open and boxes and remove things with ease. You may even want to leave yourself room for a small folding table and chair – that way, you can sit down and sort through boxes comfortably.

Make a Map

Even the largest self-storage unit is a limited space, so it may seem like overkill to create a map. But a simple sketch of the area and written guide to which items should go where can help you visualize a plan for your space that will work for you, and it will help you remember it when you go back to the unit later.

Make your map before you unload your items into your storage unit. Plan to put the less-used items closest to the walls and the most frequently needed items closest to the entrance. If you find that you've miscalculated and need to move things around as you're moving into your unit, make sure to update your map accordingly. When you're finished, post the map inside the unit where it's visible.

Stick With Small or Medium Boxes

A large box can store a lot of items, but that can be a problem when you have to go through all of those items to get to what you want. As much as possible, stick with small or medium-sized boxes that you can go through easily when you have to get something out. Plastic or cardboard boxes with removable lids can also help with organization.

In addition to making it easier to sort through your items, small and medium boxes are also easier to stack. If you do need to use large boxes, try to reserve them for the items that you won't need to access often and move them to the back of the unit.
